How to choose fall protection

  • Restraint, arrest or positioning: a restraint lanyard stops a worker reaching the edge; an energy absorbing lanyard or fall arrester block stops a fall; a positioning harness lets a lineman or climber work hands-free.
  • Anchor first: every system needs a strong anchor point above the worker. Use a beam, parapet or concrete anchor, a sling, or a lifeline where none exists.
  • Clearance: a lanyard with energy absorber needs free space below to open fully. In low height, a retractable block is the better choice.
  • Moving along an edge: a forked (double) lanyard keeps the worker clipped on at all times while changing anchors.
  • Inspect every time: check webbing, stitching, hooks and buckles before each use, and take any harness that has stopped a fall out of service.
  • Plan a rescue: a worker hanging in a harness needs to be brought down quickly; keep a rescue kit or tripod on site.

Fall Protection FAQs

Quick answers to what buyers ask us most. For anything else, ask us on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is the difference between a safety belt and a full body harness?

A waist belt only holds the worker at the waist and is used for positioning. A full body harness spreads the load over the thighs, hips, chest and shoulders, so it is the one used for fall arrest.

Which lanyard should I use with a harness?

For fall arrest, use a lanyard with an energy absorber, such as the Karam PN351N forked lanyard. For restraint, where the worker must not reach the edge, a webbing or rope restraint lanyard is used.

When should I use a retractable fall arrester block?

Where the height below the worker is limited, or where the worker moves up and down, as on ladders, tanks and loading bays. The block locks quickly and keeps the line short.

What is a suspension trauma strap?

A small strap on the harness that a worker can stand in after a fall, which takes pressure off the legs while waiting for rescue.

Are the prices on this page final?
