Types of head protection

  • Safety helmets (hard hats): HDPE and ABS helmets with ratchet, nape or slip fit adjustment from Udyogi, Karam, Mallcom, Safedot, Raga, Ladwa and Dark Eye. These are the standard choice where tools or materials can fall from above.
  • Electrical helmets: the Udyogi Electra (HDPE) and Ultra Tuff 2000 (polycarbonate) for electricians and substation work.
  • Heat helmets: the Udyogi Thermoguard 9000 FRP (fibre glass) helmet for furnaces and radiant heat.
  • Work at height helmets: Portwest PS53 Height Endurance and vented PS73 Mountaineer, with a chin strap that keeps the helmet on in a fall, and the Udyogi Lighton range.
  • Bump caps: the Udyogi Safe Top looks like a baseball cap but hides an ABS shell, in short and standard peak, blue or fluorescent green. It is for knocks in tight spaces, not for falling objects.

How to choose head protection

  • Helmet or bump cap: if anything can fall from above, use a safety helmet. A bump cap is only for low headroom where the risk is hitting your head on fixed objects.
  • Shell material: HDPE is light and low cost; ABS is stiffer and glossier; polycarbonate and FRP are used for special electrical and heat helmets.
  • Adjustment: ratchet adjustment is quick to fit and comfortable for long shifts; nape and slip fit are simpler and cost less.
  • Ventilation: vented helmets are cooler; choose non-vented helmets for electrical work.
  • Chin strap: needed for work at height, ladders and windy sites.
  • Colour: many sites mark roles by helmet colour, for example workers, supervisors, engineers and visitors.
  • Accessories: check that face shield brackets and ear muffs fit the helmet you choose. See face protection.

Head Protection FAQs

Quick answers to what buyers ask us most. For anything else, ask us on WhatsApp.

Ask on WhatsApp
What is the difference between a safety helmet and a bump cap?

A safety helmet protects against falling objects and knocks. A bump cap only protects against bumping into fixed objects in low spaces, so it must not be used where things can fall from above.

Which helmet is used for electrical work?

A non-vented helmet made for electrical work, such as the Udyogi Electra or Ultra Tuff 2000.

Why do some helmets have a chin strap?

A chin strap keeps the helmet on the head during a fall, on ladders or in wind, so it is needed for work at height.

Can I fix ear muffs or a face shield on the helmet?

Yes, with the right attachment. Helmet mounted ear muffs and face shield brackets are available; tell us your helmet model so we can confirm the fit.

Are the prices on this page final?

No. Each product shows a starting price as a guide, before GST. The final price comes with your quote and depends on the options and quantity.
