Types of road safety barriers
- Water filled barricades: hollow roto moulded LLDPE or polyethylene blocks, 1 m to 2 m long, that are carried empty and filled with water or sand on site. They interlock into a continuous wall for road works and traffic diversions. Models include New Jersey / L type, parabolic dividers, Dominator, Euro, Barricador, Star, Polo and Delux types.
- Metro and flyover barricades: tall, heavy water filled panels with space for project boards, used around metro and flyover work zones.
- Bull nose barriers: large rounded blocks with reflective bands placed at the nose of a divider, toll lane or lane split.
- Light (anti glare) barriers: green plastic panels fixed in a row on medians to cut glare from oncoming headlights.
- Fence barriers: free standing 2 m plastic fences on feet (plain, perforated, with wheels, 3 or 5 piece) and an orange mesh fence roll to cordon off digging and repairs.
- Expandable barriers: plastic or powder coated mild steel barriers that fold out to close a gate or road quickly.
- Metal crowd barricades, kerbs and accessories: steel barricades for crowd control, bolt-down lane separator kerbs, bollards, plastic chain and caution tape.
How to choose a road barrier
- Purpose: to separate live traffic from a work zone, use interlocking water filled barricades. To only mark an area, a fence barrier, chain or caution tape is often enough.
- Length and height: 1 m units are easy to move by hand; 1.5 m and 2 m units cover more length per piece. Tall metro barricades suit long-term sites.
- Weight: filled with water or sand, plastic barricades stay in place; empty, they are light enough to shift and store.
- Visibility: pick red, yellow or red and white bodies with reflective strips for night work, and add cones or blinkers where needed.
