What an evacuation chair is used for
When a building has to be cleared, or when someone is hurt or taken ill, some people cannot walk out on their own: older visitors, patients, people with an injury or a disability. An evacuation chair lets one or two trained staff move that person safely and quickly. It is lighter and narrower than a hospital wheel chair, and it folds away when not in use, so it can be kept near stairs, lifts or the first aid room.
An evacuation chair is not a replacement for a stretcher. A person who must lie flat, for example after a fall or a back injury, should be moved on a stretcher. The chair is for people who can sit up but cannot walk far or fast enough on their own.
Karma YXH-5B foldable evacuation wheel chair
- Frame: aluminium, so it is light to carry and does not rust easily.
- Wheels: four wheels to roll the person along corridors and flat ground.
- Carrying handles: so two people can lift the chair where wheels cannot be used.
- Two belts: to hold the person securely in the seat while moving.
- Foldable: folds flat to hang on a wall or store in a cupboard.
How to choose and where to keep it
- Where it is needed: offices, hospitals, clinics, hotels, schools, malls, housing societies and plants, especially buildings with many floors.
- How many: keep at least one per building, near the main stairs or first aid room; larger sites keep one per block or floor.
- Who uses it: name and train a few staff on each shift to unfold it, belt the person in and move them.
- Upkeep: check the wheels, belts and frame every month and keep the path to it clear.
