Types of hearing protection
- Disposable foam ear plugs: soft PU foam plugs that expand to fill the ear: Venus H-101 corded (NRR 32 dB, maker's rating), Mallcom SN03PC and SN03PP, 3M 1110 corded (box of 100 pairs), Honeywell Bilsom 304L, Udyogi FP 01 and UD 250, and Karam EP01 and EP02 in boxes of 200.
- Reusable ear plugs: washable flanged plugs with a cord, such as the 3M 1270, Venus N-303, Mallcom SN03SP silicone, Udyogi EP 01 silicone and the Karam reusable flanged plug.
- Ear muffs: cups with soft cushions on a headband: Venus N-550 (foldable, NRR 29 dB, maker's rating) and N-555, 3M Peltor Optime 98 H9A and Optime 101 H7A, the Honeywell Howard Leight QM24+ multi-position muff, Udyogi ET 20, ET 40, ET 50, EY22 and EY66, and Karam EP21, EP22 and a high dB model.
- Helmet mounted ear muffs: the Venus N-556 and Karam EP23, which clip onto a safety helmet.
How to choose ear plugs or ear muffs
- Noise level: pick a higher NRR or SNR (maker's rating) for louder areas, but avoid over-protection where workers must hear alarms and instructions.
- Plugs or muffs: plugs are light, cheap and comfortable in heat; muffs are quick to put on and off and suit workers who move in and out of noisy areas.
- Disposable or reusable: foam plugs are used once and thrown away; reusable plugs are washed and kept, which suits regular staff.
- Corded plugs: the cord keeps plugs round the neck when not in use, so they are not lost or dropped into products.
- With a helmet: choose helmet mounted muffs, or a multi-position muff that can be worn behind the neck.
- Fit: roll foam plugs thin and hold them in place while they expand; a poor fit gives much less protection.
