Types of speed breakers
- Rubber speed breakers: heavy black and yellow rubber sections, usually 500 mm long, bolted to the road. They stay in place under regular traffic and come in 50 mm and 75 mm heights, with designs such as arrow, burfi and lining.
- Plastic speed breakers: lighter yellow and black modules that are quick to fix, for parking areas and lighter traffic. Some can also cover cables and hoses laid across a road.
- End caps: rounded end pieces that finish the row at the road edge.
- Rumble strips: low strips of 15 mm to 25 mm, laid in rows so drivers feel and hear a warning before a gate, turn or crossing.
- Portable speed bump: a roll-out bump for temporary checkpoints.
- Expansion joint cover: a rubber cover that bridges floor gaps on parking decks, ramps and driveways.
How to choose a speed breaker
- Height: 45 mm to 50 mm suits cars in parking areas, societies and campuses. 75 mm suits heavier vehicles on factory and colony roads.
- Material: rubber is heavier and lasts under constant traffic; plastic is lighter and easier to fit and move.
- Length: measure the road width. Sections are sold by piece or in sets of 1 m to 10 m, plus two end caps per row.
- Fixing: most units are bolted to the road. Ask for a fixing kit if you need one.
- Night use: yellow and black colours and reflectors make the speed breaker easier to see.
