Types of convex mirrors

A convex mirror curves outwards, so it shows a much wider view than a flat mirror. Fixed at a blind spot, it lets drivers and walkers see what is coming before they reach the turn.

  • Outdoor road and parking convex mirrors: shatterproof polycarbonate mirrors with an orange back and a hood that keeps off rain and sun glare, with a bracket for a pole or wall. Sizes run from 18 inch (45 cm) to 40 inch (100 cm).
  • Full dome mirrors: half-sphere mirrors of 30 cm to 90 cm fixed on the ceiling to show all four directions at aisle crossings in warehouses, shops and corridors.

How to choose a convex mirror

  • Size and distance: the farther the driver is from the mirror, the bigger it should be. Small sizes (18 to 24 inch) suit gates, basements and narrow lanes; larger sizes (32 to 40 inch) suit wider plant roads and turns seen from far away.
  • Indoor or outdoor: pick an outdoor mirror with a hood for roads, gates and ramps, and a dome mirror for indoor aisles and corridors.
  • Mounting: outdoor mirrors fit on a pole or wall with the bracket; check that the pole is ready at the spot.
  • Placement: fix the mirror at a height where drivers on both sides of the turn can see it clearly.
  • Care: wipe the mirror with a soft, damp cloth. Rough cloths and strong cleaners can scratch a polycarbonate face.

A convex mirror makes things look smaller and farther away than they are, so drivers should still slow down at the turn. For a busy crossing, add a speed breaker before the corner.
