Types of road studs
A road stud (also called a cat eye or raised pavement marker) is a small marker fixed on the road surface. It catches the headlights of a vehicle, or lights up on its own, so drivers can follow the lane at night and in rain.
- Reflective road studs: plastic, ABS or polycarbonate bodies with reflectors on one or both faces, in yellow or white bodies. Sizes on this page include 10 x 9 cm and 10 x 10 cm.
- Aluminium road studs: metal bodies for roads with heavier traffic.
- Studs with shank: a stem under the stud goes into a drilled hole in the road for a firmer hold; single and double shank models are listed.
- Solar LED road studs: charge in daylight and glow at night with no wiring, in yellow or red. Models include Dark Eye Dhruv and Jugnu and an in-pavement solar marker.
How to choose a road stud
- Where it goes: lane lines and road edges usually take reflective studs. Dark stretches, sharp turns, medians and gates benefit from solar LED studs.
- Colour: white and yellow bodies, and red, amber or white reflectors, are used to mark different lines. Follow the scheme your site or road owner uses.
- Body: plastic and ABS studs suit parking, campuses and plant roads; aluminium bodies suit heavier traffic.
- Fixing: most studs are glued with adhesive or bolted down; shank models need a drilled hole.
- Pack: studs are sold single or in packs of 2 to 50.
