Types of adhesives and tapes
- Spray adhesive: 3M Super 77 (375 g), a multi-purpose spray for bonding light materials such as foam, fabric, paper and film.
- Two part epoxy: 3M Scotch-Weld DP460 (off-white, 50 ml), a tough structural adhesive for metals, plastics and ceramics.
- Instant (cyanoacrylate) adhesives: Pidilite Fevikwik 702 (medium viscosity) and Autopro IB 1304 (low viscosity, fast setting), in packs of 10, for plastic, metal and rubber.
- Double sided foam tape: 3M VHB 5952 black, 12 mm x 8.2 m, a very high bond tape used in place of screws or rivets on many panels and fittings.
- Sealing tape: 3M 4412N extreme sealing tape, 4 inch x 18 yd, that forms a watertight seal on roofs and joints.
- Anti-skid tapes: 3M Safety-Walk 610 black in 1 and 2 inch x 60 ft, and KT Automation 2 inch x 10 m anti slip tape with an 80 grit surface and a glow in dark strip.
- Floor marking tapes: 3M 471 (yellow) and 764 (red or yellow) vinyl tapes, 2 inch x 36 yd.
How to choose an adhesive
- Materials: epoxy for strong metal, plastic and ceramic joints; instant adhesive for small, quick bonds; spray adhesive for light sheets and foam; VHB tape for clean panel bonding.
- Gap and fit: low viscosity instant adhesive wicks into tight joints; medium viscosity fills small gaps better.
- Setting time: instant adhesives set in seconds; epoxy needs mixing and time to cure, but gives a stronger joint.
- Surface: clean, dry and grease-free surfaces bond best. Follow the maker's instructions for preparation and curing.
- Safety tapes: use anti-skid tape on steps, ramps and walkways, and floor marking tape for lanes and zones.
Wear safety gloves and work in a well ventilated area when using solvent sprays and epoxies.
