Types of abrasives on this page
Abrasives remove metal, paint or rust by grinding, cutting or sanding. This page has two 3M ranges.
- 3M Green Corps cut off wheel, 4 inch (pack of 50): a thin wheel for cutting metal bars, rods and sheet on an angle grinder.
- 3M Green Corps flexible discs, 100 mm: in P36 (pack of 5) for fast stock removal and P60 (pack of 10) for a smoother finish.
- 3M Green Corps rigid disc, 180 mm (pack of 5): for heavier grinding on larger grinders.
- 3M 769F T27 flap disc, 4.5 inch, P60 (pack of 5): for blending welds and finishing edges.
- 3M 401Q Wetordry sheets, P1500 and P2000 (pack of 5): fine grit sheets for wet or dry hand sanding of paint, primer and metal.
- 3M Scotch-Brite 7447 hand pad, 6 x 9 inch (pack of 10): a non-woven pad for cleaning and light finishing, an alternative to steel wool.
How to choose an abrasive
- Job: cut with a cut off wheel, remove material with a grinding disc, blend and finish with a flap disc, and sand or clean by hand with sheets and pads.
- Grit: a lower number (P36) is coarse and removes material fast; a higher number (P60, P1500, P2000) gives a finer finish.
- Size: match the wheel or disc diameter to the grinder and its guard: 4 inch, 100 mm, 4.5 inch or 180 mm.
- Speed: never run a wheel faster than the speed printed on it (maker's rating), and keep the guard on.
- Storage: keep wheels dry and flat, and do not use a chipped or cracked wheel.
Grinding throws sparks and fragments, so workers should wear a face shield, safety glasses and safety gloves.
