What is in a spill kit

A spill of oil, coolant or chemical on a floor is a slip risk, a health risk and can reach drains if it is not stopped. A spill kit keeps everything needed to deal with it in one place. The Venus SORB kits contain:

  • Absorbent socks: long tubes placed around the spill to stop it from spreading or reaching a drain.
  • Absorbent pads: flat sheets laid on the spill to soak up the liquid.
  • Absorbent pillows: thicker cushions for larger pools or leaks under drums and machines.
  • Container: the kit comes packed in a container that keeps the items clean and dry and can be used to collect the used absorbents.

The absorbents are made from recycled textile and pick up oils and many common chemicals, so one kit can serve a mixed workshop or store.

VKIT 50 or VKIT 120: how to choose

  • Size of the largest spill: pick the kit by the biggest container that could leak in that area. The SORB-VKIT 50 is the smaller kit; the SORB VKIT 120 is the larger kit for bigger drums and stores.
  • Where to keep it: near chemical and oil stores, drum racks, workshops, generator rooms, loading bays and labs, in a marked spot that is easy to reach.
  • How many: one kit per risk area works better than one large kit far away.
  • What spills: check the safety data sheet of each chemical so the team knows the right PPE and how to dispose of used absorbents.
  • Refill: replace what was used after every spill, so the kit is always complete.

Before cleaning up a chemical spill, staff should wear the right gloves, eye protection and, if there are fumes, a suitable respirator.
